Every Role Matters

Everyone loves a reason to celebrate team members, show appreciation, and eat yummy snacks - and such a time is almost upon us! Veterinary Technician Week starts tomorrow, October 15th, and ends on Saturday, October 21st.

GVTAA will utilize the upcoming week to highlight the role of Licensed Veterinary Technicians to the general public, encourage discussion among the profession, and spotlight several GA licensed veterinary technicians.

In 1993, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) put forth a resolution, dedicating one week to honoring Veterinary Technicians during the 3rd week of October each year.

Those in our profession know the uphill battle Veterinary Technicians have faced for recognition and title protection. In Georgia, "Veterinary Technician" is a protected title defined as "a licensed person who engages in the practice of veterinary technology and on the basis of his or her qualifications is validly and currently licensed by the board for such purpose" by the Georgia Veterinary Practice Act (https://gvma.net/georgia-veterinary-practice-act/).

Our efforts to distinguish the role of licensed veterinary technicians have never and will never attempt to diminish the role of veterinary assistant or any other member of the veterinary team. Every role matters. We are all in this together. The roles of veterinary assistants are as vital to licensed veterinary technicians as they are to the veterinarians. Veterinary Technicians have their own unique part to play, and we are here to celebrate that this week.

Happy almost Vet Tech Week y'all
